Post Helmet from o/s Reply with quote
I've read lots of guff about this on the web, but thought I'd ask here anyway:

Does anyone have any experience of buying a helmet from the US for use here in Oz? I'm thinking of getting a Shoei Multitec on eBay and saving $400 on the going price of AUD $899.

Some say the law states that if a helmet is already approved for use in Australia, then it should be fine, others say it HAS to have the Australian Standards sticker on or it's not legal. Personally, the only thing that would bother me is being rejected in an insurance claim - I doubt I'll ever be checked by the police, and I'm quite happy on the safety of that brand and model helmet. I'd love to know why we're paying the extra $400 - how much of that is profit to the dealer and how much is tax? Seems exorbitant whichever way it goes. If it was $100 more, then I'd buy one from here, but not at nearly double.

Comments, anyone?

Who will ever know that the helmet was purchsed elsewhere?

I have no idea what the legalities are in OZ or here in NZ, the thought never occurred to me when I bought my Shark helmet for a fraction of the price in Canada a few years back...

When the helmet was damaged and replaced there was never a question raised by my insurance company.
I guess it depends how anal the assessor is?

And here in Oz, apparently we have to have a sticker displayed on the outside of the helmet. I notice my Nolan's got one - the logo with the 5 ticks.

I have a Reevu helmet made in Italy
While they are approved for road use in Europe & NZ they are still undergoing testing for approval in Australia & US
Similar to you I am quite happy with the safety of the helmet & chose to purchase it
Now from what I have heard NO helmet is street legal for use in Australia without the Aust Standards sticker on it
Mine hasn't got one .................. never had a hassle there yet
Hadn't consider the insurance claim knock back but I doubt it would come up & if it did I would have been wearing my other helmet which does have the Aust Standards sticker wink

Also those Aust Standard stickers are always falling off
You could easily be mistaken which helmet it fell off & place it back on the wrong one question wink

Years ago I was in a pub when a bloke came in with a whole roll of the silver shiny helmet Aust Standard stickers (well it looked like them) & was selling them for $5 each laughing
Should have got a pocket full ................

Display a sticker?Really?
Jeez...there is still a lot of the "she'll br right" attitude here in NZ...quite frankly the helmets i see some people wearing make me shudder...
As for those half-helmet 'skull cap' monstrosities...how the HELL can they be considered to meet safety standards when the rider is gonna kiss goodbye to their face if they hit the road? I have been on a ride where the bloke behind didn't make the corner and ploughed straight into a power pole. He was wearing one of those things and the emergency crew said if he had been wearing a proper full face he would have lived...
it was messy.

Sad but true. I bought a budget full face when I first started riding road bikes.

Ripped all the go faster stickers off to bring it back to basic black as well as the Aus Std sticker.

Despite the fact I bought it here and had the receipt the local plod made me replace it because it was no longer approved for road use with out the sticker.

Personally, I think he was just dark because I was on a very loud but legal RG250 and he wanted to show me he was the man.

Oh well, you meet all types on the road.

G'day Meteor.
Speaking from experience after my recent off, my insurer wanted to sight my helmet & gear before they would replace or repair & as I was still using the helmet I was allowed to send a photo which must include the sticker on the helmet.

& Maybe it's just a Victorian thing but I know people that have been pinged for taking the sticker off the helmet which from memory was a fine & points.
Personally I wouldn't risk it.
Can't take the sticker off a push bike helmet & put it your lid either as it say's VOID as soon as you take it off.  laughing

You can be controlled for the sticker.  You can be booked if you don't have one.

I'm also gonna take a punt on a non-approved helmet soon.... had my eye on one for about 12months and I don't think they're available in Oz.
I've never had my helmet checked by the local cops... but that probably because they're always too busy druelling over the wierd lookin' lil bike that sounds like an approaching thunderstorm. I'll just have to remember to use my approved helmet when travelling to more metro areas.
