Galah Poaching Anyone Interested.

When my brother & sister in law were over from the Uk she was amazed at our bird life in Oz but was truly amazed by the amount of Galah's that were around.

I said to her that I regarded them as intrusive, destructive pests & explained the damage that I have had done to my property.
To which my brother said "well when we see Galah's just see money because they are selling for £1000 each & even more for a quiet one"

$2100 for a stinking Galah. shocked
Who has some good poaching tips for me.

Here is a pic so our over seas friends know what a Galah is.

i PRESUME that your talking about the birds...  not the brown patches..??
buellbabe

ohhhhhh what cute wittle birdies...

Seriously tho I can relate to yr frustration at their destructive habits.

I feel the same about cute bunnies (aka dog tucker). There are heaps of them in the reserve where I exercise my dogs... and I fully encourage 'the girls' to hunt them.
But I have to limit when and where cos lots of families use this park and there was this time... Dyna and Shar were pulling a rabbit to pieces and then around the corner comes this ma&pa with little kids... oh dear, there were tears LOL

Tears of joy though right?  twisted evil

They kinda reminda me of pigeons, friggin rats with wings....

I used to eat them as well as top knot pigeons and bunnies as a kid. I have a good galah recipe if anyone's interested.
mick

Top Knots I've tried, but I don't think I'll worry about galah wink

Mate of mine used to eat cold roast Galah for lunch.

Spent as much time spitting shot gun pellets out as eating. hunt
Krusty

I was going to give the old recipe with the bird, pot of water, herbs and a rock in the water. You all know the one. wink

how about a goshawk?

its a regular visitor here.
Aussie XB12SS

Now that's my type of bird. yeah!
buellbabe

Bird of prey... yeah... how big are they?

Here in En Zed we have the native NZ Falcon but sadly it is endangered... pretty rare to see one in the wild these days.
buellbabe

Here is a pic of NZ Falcons 'on duty'. They are used in vineyards for pest control.
VERY effective.

looking for a bit of "takeaway"  sad

nz is a beautiful country, i spent from 86 to 88 there on a "working" holiday based in hastings in the north island.

i joined the local vintage club there and met some brilliant people with amazing restoration skills for bikes and cars.

bought an austin 7 made in 1932 and restored it and along the way looking for parts to complete the job, i found all sorts of rare and interesting cars tucked away in old barns and houses.
one old barn with austin 7 parts strewn all over the floor in the hay and a 2 door jag from the 30's  in the corner. yep he knew is was $120k worth of car !
4 houses on a farm, one was the "lived" in one and the other 3 full, i mean chokkers of everything needed to rebuild roughly 20 or so early fords, there were tubs, axles, motors, chrome bits etc and the bloody magpie wouldnt part with anything  confused
buellbabe

That hoarding of precious things in barns is sooooooooooooo kiwi. hahahahahaha
We love our sheds!

Back to the birds...the NZ falcon actually gets preyed on by the Aussie Harrier Hawk! Bloody overstayer!
BGA

Christ, the hawk would be the only export from oz to unzed, wouldn't it?

Oh no, just saw the news, your getting woolworths/safeway just to completely kill of your retail industry!!!!!
buellbabe

ha ha ha...nope...your blimmin possum is a major pest over here. My dogs hunt and kill the barstards. hunt  hammer
Bombardier

Not really. When they want a bit of work done they import Aussies.

heh heh
buellbabe

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

surely you jest????

I heard it worked the other way actually... saw a doco story the other night... Kiwis in ozzy getting paid big money, company cars, flights home etc... had to admit that I am tempted to cross the ditch LOL
Bombardier

I am sure someone of your calibre will be more than welcome 'Babe.
buellbabe

oops this is getting a bit off topic sorry...buuuuuut ironically I work for an Australian company! PMP LTD.
They bought the company when it was just prepress and called Showads...and guess what? Showads was also an Australian company. Started out as just a small family firm doing specialist retouching and expanded across Ozzy and into NZ!
