Testing the Limits of Yourself & Your Bike Survey

Hi,

My name is Catherine and I'm currently looking for people to participate in my research project. This project is part of my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology degree at Deakin University.

The project follows up a study conducted in 2008, which found that people high in psychological need for control (people who like a lot of control over their lives - if you like, ‘control freaks’!) were generally safer riders. However, we unexpectedly also found that these riders reported more performance of stunts (wheelies and wheel spins).

This study therefore aims to further explore the relationship between safety and stunting. Are those high in need for control seeking to test the limits of themselves and their bikes? Can stunting help you become a safer rider?

We are therefore looking for licenced on-road motorcycle riders, who have ridden within the last 24 months, to complete the confidential questionnaire that makes up this project.

If you're interested in participating, or just want to find out more, then please follow the link below

but i do "stoppies"....

does that make me an "ANTI control freak"?
Fuzz

Interesting "test", though I do not put any stock in Pschobabble,
and find that conclusions made from data such as this is totally useless,
except as fodder for an over zealous professor, sorry eye roll

I tend to agree.

Im no control freak but sure as hell like being the dumbarse when it comes to wheelies etc.
buellbabe

Well I don't pull wheelies and stoppies but that is only cos I have never learnt how to...believe me one of my dreams is to leave the Puhoi Pub on the back wheel yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeha!

I'm a self-confessed hoon but I know my limits. That said...knowing my limits, I like to push them  wink
Moody Blue

I'm with Buellbabe,

Just luv knowing the limits of my bike.

These days I am the limiting factor. Chicken strip is getting wider.

I do know that you have to keep pushing the limits to stay "In Tune" or "In Form"

I recently caned my Cylone through my favourite "twisties". I reckon bike would have said "Ho Hum" but I was wrecked, but had not ridden for several months.

Was way faster on the trip home including hanging around 230k's for 10 miles or so...........

FWIW

Can be summed up as ' If you dont use it you lose it"

Try geting back into the boxing ring after a short layoff and the the difference between I think I can and I know I can becomes very apparent very quickly as you look up at the fellow who just smacked ya from the canvas.

No different on a bike, race car, running track or JENGA. heheheh.
buellbabe

So true... I have been unable to ride for almost 2 weeks as I injured my left shouler quite badly in a fall and have limited movement in it at the mo. Well I finished work early yesterday and rode the CR for a very short distance and wow! it felt really weird...is it me? is it the bike? did it feel like this before? all those thoughts were going through my head. Not helped by the fact that I was VERY aware of my shoulder.

Gonna take the X1 for a blat this weekend cos that is a bike that I KNOW REALLY WELL  very happy

i would think it would be more like...

(from BB)... "there i was, glass empty, ice box could not have been more than 12 steps away, out of no-where comes a shadow, causing me to trip on the grass, good thing though, i didn't break my glass!!!...
buellbabe

OW! Don't make me laugh! It hurts my shoulder LOL!

And anyway I don't drink Bourbon. This girl is strictly Tequila, JDs or vino...

But that does remind me of a time I fell down a flight of stairs and landed at the bottom saying "ish ok! I didn't shpill any... hic..."
Bombardier

Oh, so you are one of those Glass is half full type of girls.........Interesting..

Dear participant in the "Psychological Desire for Control, Testing the Limits, and Australian Motorcyclists" study

Thank you for completing our survey on motorcycling behaviour - your time and enthusiasm were very much appreciated.

You can find a summary of the study on the following website: http://www.deakin.edu.au/psychology/research/motorcyclingstudy/

Cheers,
Lucy & Catherine

It still sounds like a bunch of baloney to me...

Her findings that stunters seem to have better control in the event of an accident?

Personally my experience has been that most of the stunters I know are usually idiots on the road, they may be good riders but they do stupid things that put themselves and others at risk. Example: a rider is committed on a narrow tight corner, no visibilty through the corner and all of a sudden some clown overtakes...on THE BACK WHEEL!!!! Yep! I have seen it happen and the rider being overtaken wasn't a nana, he did well to hold his line but there were some words said at the next stop, thought there was gonna be fisticuffs.

Dunno about you guys but most of the people I know and respect as really good riders either race on the track and/or have a background in dirtbikes.

stunters... meh from what Iv seen thay are only any good at just that.

Ya right about the track, but generally only thos that road ride aswell, as the skills for both do differ, I have tried mixing the to styles and have come up with a reasonble combernation, but its not easy.

IMO, time in the saddle is what brings beter control in the event of an accident, and infact helps prevent the acco form even happening.
buellbabe

Yep with ya there D, track AND road riding combined.

Plus also agree (OMG this must be a first eh? he he he) with 'time in the saddle'. There is no substitution for good honestly-come-by EXPERIENCE. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't but either way you learn...
Fuzz

I wrote a pm to them in August,

"Please do not be offended by our responses to your test, it is nothing personal.
Perhaps you would learn more by learning to ride a motorcycle, owning, registering,
insuring, and living with a motorcycle as your transportation.
Then you could experience the life that goes along with being a biker, the staunch friendships,
the thrills, the fears, the rivalries, the freedom...
If a person really wants to understand, they cannot stand on the outside looking in.
That is the reason we bikeres have a saying,
"If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand!"  "

Obviously, they still don't get it, and they probably never will...

Great reply Fuzz,

"Monty Python"

You youngsters are so soft!!!!
In my day we used to ride into brick walls just to wake up in the morning. Then we would put on our baked bean tin helmets with the razor blades on the INSIDE and bang our heads on the handlebars every mile just to let ourselves know how easy we had it.

You softies just dont know how easy you have it!!!!

I used to dream of living in a corridor.

hahahahahahaha, yeah I learnt that its possible to land in some pretty weird places and positions and still walk away LOL

My all time funniest was many years ago on my DT175...had been visiting a mate who lived out in the wops... as we were walking back thru the bush to the bikes I remember thinking " jeez I hope I make it outta here in one piece! ".

Well I negotiated the extremely bumpy and narrow track on the bike and was doing really well , the road was in sight, I breathed a sigh of relief and gave it a bit of a squirt to get over a fallen branch and next moment I was airborne!

Landed about 2 metres down the hill on the other side of the road buried in the blackberry bushes! It was a classic, one of my more spectacular bins LOL! Of course me and bike were fine  very happy
