To Nod or Not to Nod...This is a topic I posted in the SVDU forum ages ago... It's good for a bit of banter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you a nodder? Do you pick and choose who you give the 'nod' to? Have you nodded to someone today??? I even nod to Harley riders (they love it)...not.... Have you nodded to a fellow rider and then remembered you are in your car??? Long live the nod i reckon.

I usually give a nod out on the highways but rarely in city traffic. I remember back when I first got my licence (1973) we all gave a wave or just stuck ya left hand in the air. I remember riding down the Hume from Albury to Melb on my lonesome and gradually picking up other bike riders on the way. By the time we got to the outskirts of Melbourne there was about a dozen of us riding together.
The guys on Harleys don't wave cos its not cool or they're scared they will lose control.LOL

I go the nod a fair bit
Or quite often I`ll give lift a finger off the grips to "wave"
A lot will acknowledge
Some wont, but I still try to acknowledge all riders
Its up to them if they want to respond

I'm a noddy or wavy. If they are on two wheels and I am not engaged in avoiding someone trying to kill me. More people waved or nodded in the earlier days. Funny thing about Harley-Davidson riders. My wife was riding pillion on the back of my StreetRod and as we went past a group of 20 plus (HOG members) standing outside a coffee place posing in their gear we both waved. Many of them had turned to look at what was riding past, I didn't see one acknowledgement.

I`ve got many nods etc.... back from HD`s
Agreed some will never acknowledge you but there are many decent folk riding HD`s
And as a former HD`er I always returned a nod/wave

Will always nodd to anyone, even the bloke standing at the side of the road. If I don't I'm watching the road.

Re: To Nod or Not to Nod...Are you a nodder? Yo & finger
for the car drivers at times.
Do you pick and choose who you give the 'nod' to? We have a certain "group" around here so we give each other the same response.
Have you nodded to someone today??? Yep. Mr Honda cruiser rider didn't know what to do. . I had the open face & leather vest so I notice that what ever jacket & helmet I have on effects the response I get.
Have you nodded to a fellow rider and then remembered you are in your car??? No, but I do notice a lot of car drivers lift the finger.
Long live the nod i reckon. Agree

You need to learn the signs of a pre-nod. There are Harley's that nod. The longer you and the oncoming rider are in vision the more chance of a nod.
I always return a nod. I usually prepare to nod on the hwy, but round town there is usually too much going on to worry about it.
A nod is a small, short noticable dip of the head. It is uncool to twist the neck at the same time. You cannot flick your fringe in a helmet.

I have even nodded to bike cops knowing that I'll get no response, just for the off chance I'll get a reply

I'm a nodder and or waver, unless I recognize the rider as a snooty winger......
I wave at cops on bikes, and sometimes they wave back...
A year ago I ran into one my old customers from the last bike shop I worked for, and he said, "Haven't seen ya for a while!" I said, "You see me every day, but yer too stuck up to wave at me on my Buell!!" I think it hit home, cuz now I see him waving at folks on bikes unlike his own

I usually nod, unless it's a motor-scooter or a Harley. I'll bet HD riders would die if they knew I'd put 'em in the same category!
Saw a bloke go past as I was coming off the CityLink in Richmond the other day, on the way home from work. He was also riding an XB. Nodded, then pulled a quick wheelie as he crossed in front of me. Cracked me up!
It's funny how many bikes will drop back when they hear the exhaust note, to have a closer look. So few Buells on the road here in Melb.

If ya ever see the Glide in my avatar, ya better wave!!! LOL!!

I wave.
Air intake fell of my BMW on the highway once. 3 different bikers went past me as I tried to stick the bloody thing back where it came from. Only one of them stopped and it was a Harley rider.
Never judge a book by its cover I say.

I always stop when I see a scooter on the side of the road, especially when they put out the "Broke down" flag, which us semi-grey beards know is placing your helmet on the ground about 20 meters behind your bike.

Do that in Oz Fuzz and when you put it back on you will more than likely have an unwanted passenger of the poisonous/venomous kind!!!!
Not cool when a spider makes its presense felt on your favourite set of twisties!

That would put quite a damper on your day!!
So, how do you go about camping trips?

you sit there all night holding the mortein and a big stick at the ready!!!
Nah, we're all immune these days, been bitten so many times by the wildlife. drop bears are the worst.
Hog riders in Adelaide generally dont wave, although mostly the non-outlaw hog riders. I've nodded at outlaws before and they've nodded back. 99% of beemer riders dont nod. I think the rest of us are beneath their dignity to acknowledge. But even some of the young dudes on gsxr r1 fireblade rocketships don't nod either. Its the real riders who nod, the ones who get it, you know, understand the bond between riders and have lived the life, living and breathing motorcycles whatever you ride. commuter riders dont seem to get it. boy racers dont seem to get it. On the long stretches between towns in the bush, people get it. Everyone nods then, even car drivers.

I think you 've nailed it, certainly seems to be the case here in Tassie

As for me, well sometimes I nod sometimes not... depends on speed/mood/ etc... usually I do tho
Actually I am more likely to give a curteous nod to the rider I have just passed...

I started the bike (with the Micron) at Harley City on Saturday and immediately got three nods (probably before they knew what they were doing).

I reckon most do not nod at Buells cos they are busy trying to find the harley behind the sports bike.

Ah yes but is it a restrained 15% tilt forwards or do you crank your head in a big circle (and suffer vertigo)?
|
Bueller

Small is cool The aim is for the other rider to be saying "I think they nodded."

A nod is as good as a wink. Yes Bueller - I am with you, subtle not the "head on a spring" approach.
