all my mates

My little afternoon ride on the ‘Yellow Bird II’ from Road Warriors Café just [north of Sydney] to Ipswich [west of  Brisbane] 962 klm an 10.5 hours  on the Pathetic Hwy [ Route 1 the Pacific Hwy ]

The story so far …

Purchased a stock , red , Buell XB12R with 3800klm in Mar 07 (its is an 06 model) expressly to  build up a bike as a long term ownership project …a keeper.. I hated the red and was on e bay that day looking for yellow body work in the States , found it , a Race can and Race chip and a Pingle power shifter
The shifter is a long story but basically I had a bike to bike head on a few years ago ..not my fault, broke my left ankle and I am in extreme pain to change gear all day ….no way could I own a 600 super sport for example  .Oh also I am 192cm tall and 120kg so I look like a bear on a bicycle on any sport bike , even on my FLSTC for that matter!

I have a background in racing air cooled flat six cars, and I have done well building racers for torque rather than horsepower especially as most Australian Circuits and public roads are full of ‘slow’ corners and overtaking

I was well aware the difference that a bolt in ‘crate’ 127  cid motor had made to my old Softy 80 cid FLSTC with 150000 MILES on it so I went looking for a similar transformation of the Buell

My previous Tube Frame X1 Buell went 90 HP at the back wheel  with the usual can and chip and the XB handled and rode much better, less KGs  but was way less phat in the going bit …

Harley  dealers I spoke to and some ‘tuners’ were no help …’no one dooen much stuff for them XB yet mate, the case is lighter and less ridged than the old Sporty/ Buells ‘ ‘Why don’t u by a tubi ?’ …nah been there

Found Revolution in the States make lots of good bits with ‘nicasil’ bores , I knew this stuff with the Porsche engines since the 70s . Revolution also supply the factory Buell air cooled XBRR with a 80 CID set up so that’s a good recommendation !   The people there were great and I asked many many questions and traded e mail till I had the cam , bore, valves, springs, rockers and revs I was hopeful of !

I did a lot of modeling on the Porsche engine stuff I kept during the those racing years and with similar  RPM range and a smaller cylinder volume in the air cooled , separate cylinder Porsche six all the exhaust systems I could find looked wrong to me. I reckoned on 140- 150 engine HP was possible , even allowing for the shared throttle body of the XB but I did not know how to discount for a twin over the Porsche 6

I found Trojan in the UK and they had a ‘Revso’ system used by their [ I think] Battle Twin winning Xbs …It looked the goods and their primaries were MASSIVE and a nice long secondary all the way down the engine trans unit before a light muffler and exit up the front. Looked good for torque and with a muffler ..they said it was race only ….yeh yeh !

I Met Steve (MCW ) and he was such a nice guy and asked lots of detailed questions… I was more than happy to hand him my fancy boxes of bits and pretty little bike

I have built several flat 6s but have no were to do engine work now and no experience with Hd engines after the 45 cid Flat head !

So the bike was apart for 9 months , with the majority of that to have the heads modified to fit the valves and cam profile to prevent a clash on overlap ..and there is lots of that !

Sat pick up / Sunday Ride

When Steve handed it over on Sat midday he looked at me sternly and said ‘Have you considered fitting a Jap front end and bks to it as I have run it out of brakes twice on my local test road , it is deceptive and accelerates without the revs ..I been caught out by it a few times going too fast for approaching corners ‘ ..My reaction …. Well yeh ! hand over the key !!

Steve it runs fine and for me as not at all expert rider it is intimidating pure intimidating past ¾ throttle …I have never slid , wheel spun a bike but in slow corners , roundabouts etc if you are tired after 10 hour ride and go for the throttle to stand the bike up on the exit the back seams to slip like a car  down the camber and a judder when it hooks up ..is that sliding a bike ?? and at 120k when you grab the throttle full and it gets on the cam and gives a little weave and tosses its head as it comes straight is that wheel spin ? Yikes !

The standard clutch does need a BEX and a good lie down but I can fix that easily all this because we have increased the Capacity by 12% and increased the torque by 35 % to 100 lbft at the back wheel with a full of fuel mass of less than 200 kg this thing is quick all over

Overtaking
Say there are 2 trucks and a car with a van , single lane road , car coming in the distance and you want to overtake …that will be a 5th roll on sir from 3500 and by 4000 it will slip the back wheel , or slip the clutch or wheelie past the cars

So was it worth the money and time …well went up My Glorious today ….yea it was worth it

Rob
